Also, the supreme court decided that, yes, Americans really do have the right to own guns. I’m very libertarian on issues like this, which, to the horror of my immediate family, means I do not favor gun control.

In other news, I saw ATB (German DJ) at Epic on friday, and it was awesome, at least until we got kicked out at 2 AM by some douchey bouncer. “No reentry now.” Whatever, man.

A post-nuclear future

Planning for a post-navy future is somewhat weird considering I haven’t even gone through basic yet, but it’s what I’m doing – I’m a compulsive planner. I was visiting a certain forum today (www.nukeworker.com), and I saw figures like 80-100k+ thrown out left and right. I sure picked the right field. Damn.

Well, It’s sunday evening and I haven’t done a whole lot this weekend. I was going to go protest against Scientology, until I realized I didn’t give a damn. Ah well. What I did do (with my mother, no less), was go see The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which (in my opinion) wasn’t anything special, even though everyone else in the whole universe thinks it’s the best thing to happen to movies ever (94% aggregate reviews at rottentomatoes, ugh).

Ennui is a good word for what I’m feeling, I think. As the readers of this blog (all three of you) may know, I’ve joined the navy, and my tentative ship date is in the middle of June. I don’t know for sure when, because my recruiter can’t give me an exact date yet, but I’ll be able to play some frisbee and chill with the college friends until I go. I LOVE frisbee.

Oh, and it’s also way too fucking cold here, so someone please buy me a nice vacation to Australia or something. Thanks.

The Kingmaker and Al Gore

Here’s a funny opinion piece posted by the eds. at the Times, detailing how Edwards could change the contest if he cedes his delegates to either of the two major candidates, or how, if the nomination hits total gridlock, Al Gore could be chosen as a compromise candidate.

The possibility of seeing Al Gore in the White House is intriguing, now that he is widely regarded as a saint.

Obama and Billary, or Billary and Obama, or even, god forbid, Al Gore and Billary with Obama in a cabinet position – no matter what, it’s every democrat’s wet dream. And even if Al Gore isn’t involved in any way with the presidency itself, he’s still likely to get a cabinet position or somesuch. Hooray for the democratic revival.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and other cinematic undertakings

Some background: I was at my dad’s place last weekend, and I had a Saturday night to kill (weird, I know), so I decided to watch two movies I had downloaded the week before: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and Gone Baby Gone. I had heard good things about Gone Baby Gone (weird, since Ben Affleck is involved), so I sat my ass down and prepared for 4+ hours of the finest laptop-sized movie-going experience imaginable.

Two hours later, I was floored. One of my coworkers (a self-proclaimed cinephile and graduate of the prestigious MCTC school of film) had claimed the movie was sub-par, and tried too hard to be ‘morally ambiguous’. Whatever the hell that means. This movie was amazing. Casey Affleck, supported by Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris as morally bankrupt cops, is a private detective who is hired by the family of a missing child to find their daughter. Since, I don’t want to give too much away, I’ll just say Casey Affleck is awesome, as is Amy Ryan as the crack-addicted mother of the missing girl.

Now, the main reason for this post: The Assassination of Jesse James…etc; I’ll just say I think it’s the best movie of 2007. Hands down. No contest. Critics don’t like slowly paced westerns (and slowly paced movies in general), but as someone who, in his own opinion, has good taste in movies, I would recommend this above any other movie in 2007. Also, it has one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard (dark instrumentals and folksy stuff I guess).

Super Tuesday…

It’s that time again – Super Tuesday. This is the first time I’ll be able to caucus, and vote as well – which is good, since I actually care about a few of the candidates this time around (cough, Obama). Just imagine a ‘dream ticket’ of Obama with Billary as his vp…wow, huh?

Update 1: Voted for Obama; about 70% of the other people I talked to were also voting for Obama. I’d hazard a guess that 80% of the caucus-goers were under 30….Obama fodder.
